1984-JS

1984 on Dipity.

Well, I’ll tell you sonny boy, there are a lot of years in my life that I might consider memorable, but I think that one year that definitely sticks out above the rest is the year of 1984. Man those were the days. Lord bless those rockin 80’s. Glam Rock, synthesizers, ridiculous amounts of hairspray. Now if you are asking me about what specifically stands out, well I do have a few events in my mind that I can recall without too much trouble.
To start us off, why don’t I tell you all about the Macintosh. Boy that Steve Jobs really knew his stuff. That Mac came out on January 24th. Now I know it wasn’t sleek and cool like y’alls computers today, but this baby was the first personal computer with a mouse and it was the first computer that let us use images (something about graphic user interface or other) rather than just using text commands. It don’t seem much to you now but back then that was righteous.
Another date that comes to mind is January 27th. Literally 3 days later. You ask, why does that date come to mind? Well that was the day that Michael Jackson’s hair was almost burned off during a Pepsi commercial shoot. Honestly, that says it all. Michael Jackson’s hair was on fire. Let that sink in for a minute.
Let’s see, another big thing that happened that year was the Summer Olympics. Guess what home slice? That took place right here in the good U S of A, in Los Angeles, California. Now Tehran was originally going to host the games but there was a lot of political and social turmoil in the country, so Los Angeles got elected by default. This happened to be the second time that Los Angeles hosted the games. Lord knows though, there was a large amount of boycotting going on. The Soviet Union, Cuba, East Germany, Iran, and Libya were all boycotting, but the games still went off.
The Space Shuttle Challenger took off that year too. It was October 5, and boy was that a mission to remember. For the first time, two women were members of the crew. In fact, if I recall one of them was even able to spacewalk. Boy that sounded exciting. For a time there I wanted to be an astronaut.
Then there were the elections. It was Reagan against Mondale. Reagan beat Mondale with 59% of the popular vote. Heck he carried 49 states in the Electoral College. I know your generation don’t much mind to that but back then we took elections very seriously.
Anyway, 1984. Way more than just a depressing book. You laugh at me now, but I reckon when you get up to my age you might be recollecting the years with your very own sonny boy.
